BMES at Kirklees Model Boat Club Open Day 2025
Filed under: Recent News
Kirklees Model Boat Club once again kindly invited us to their open day at Wilton Park Lake in Batley. Allen Ambridge, a recently joined member, took a few excellent photos of the event, which we’d like to share with you.
The first one shows our ‘pop-up stand’, displaying a few models, notably Allen’s Motor Torpedo boat in its carrycase, and sheltering a few members from the scorching sun (not often you can say that in Britain 😊). It was good to see a few members join us throughout the day.
Photo 2 shows Bryan Roebuck’s Harbour Patrol boat, particularly poignant after his recent death.
As well as a few local societies, Kirklees invite a couple of suppliers, the one next to us being H A Kits:
Photo 4 shows some of the excellent boats on Kirklees’s own stand.
But the most impressive models are those on, or in, the water, with photos showing a lifeboat, battleship and two superb submarines.
It was an excellent day, with a good number of visitors. Our thanks go to the Kirklees club for their hospitality and opportunity to promote BMES and to enjoy the many and varied, superbly built, marine models.

The Bradford Challenge 2025
Saturday 7th June 2024, 13:00 – 16:00 at Northcliff Railway
Every year, our members build locomotives that are designed to compete in a time trial around our miniature raised track in Northcliffe Woods, Shipley. This has evolved into “The Bradford Challenge” for which, as a local model engineering society, college or school, you are cordially invited to join.
We believe that this challenge offers an excellent opportunity for your students or members, either individually or in teams, to design and build a bespoke locomotive. Each is an excellent project in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, which could be part of a student’s curriculum or just a fun model to make.
Typically, the locomotives are either powered by:
- “Ducted fan(s) or Propellers” or
- “Wheel-driven”
To give as much opportunity as possible and to cater for all levels of expertise and pockets, particularly younger or aspiring engineers, we also run an:
In this entry class, any form of construction and propulsion can be considered, including Lego or Meccano, electric motor or rubber band!
Depending on response & demand, a basic kit of parts, including wheels and an electric motor, can be provided.
For further details and guidelines of all the classes, please see over the page. To see a locomotive’s view of the track, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHcult62ZPY.
