{"id":11,"date":"2012-02-05T23:11:50","date_gmt":"2012-02-05T23:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2020-06-18T20:46:03","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T19:46:03","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/?page_id=11","title":{"rendered":"Society History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121 alignleft\" title=\"hist1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist1-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist1-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist1.jpg 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr. Amos Barber<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The beginning of Bradford Model Engineering Society goes back to the 1900\u2019s or maybe even before, when a group of men from all walks of life met informally in one of the local coffee taverns to discuss the making of models.\u00a0This new hobby appears to have waned a little as from 1904 we have no record until 1908 when some of the same men met again to constitute the society.<\/p>\n<p>One of these men, Mr. Amos Barber along with Mr. Bickerdike, Mr. Ault, Mr. Cordingley and others were instrumental in forming the society.\u00a0Mr Barber&#8217;s magnificent models are on permanent display at Bradford Industrial Museum.<\/p>\n<p>It is also on record that B.M.E.S is the fourth oldest model engineering society in the world.<\/p>\n<p>There have been many wonderful milestones in the history of this society.<\/p>\n<p>BELOW ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR DATES AND EVENTS<\/p>\n<p>In the 1940\u2019s B.M.E.S. supported \u201cHOLIDAYS AT HOME\u201d at Lister Park in Bradford.<\/p>\n<p>1945 saw B.M.E.S. at the forefront in the forming of the NORTHERN ASSOCIATION OF MODEL ENGINEERS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-123\" title=\"hist2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist2-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist2-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist2.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the late 1940\u2019s our first permanent railway was built at Thackley, near Bradford, but after nearly 20 years, in 1966, agreement was reached with the then Shipley Council\u00a0to relocate to our present home in Northcliffe Woods, Shipley.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-124\" title=\"hist3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist3.jpg 297w, https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist3-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>September 7th 1969 saw an Impressive 60 mile non stop run by a 5\u201d gauge freelance locomotive called \u201cPamela\u201d on the newly constructed track.<\/p>\n<p>St. Georges Hall, Bradford was the venue in 1977 for a major model engineering exhibition which attracted many thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of a new plywood portable railway track in 1979 was a vast improvement on the old steel one.\u00a0In the years following, a ground level 5\u201d and 7\u00bc\u201d gauge track has been built.<\/p>\n<p>2008 was our CENTENARY YEAR<\/p>\n<p>THIS IS ONLY A VERY SHORT HISTORY OF B.M.E.S LONG MAY IT CONTINUE<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Photo Archive<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-125\" title=\"hist4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist4-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist4-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bradfordmes.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hist4.jpg 364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Very Early Model Boating Enthusiasts &#8211;
